Even though the graphic score is a relatively recent development in Western art music, other cultures have used graphic musical notation for centuries: Shingon Buddhist monks, Shinto kagura musicians, Noh theater drummers, Copts in ancient Egypt, etc. These 19th century Tibetan chant samples are another excellent example of the aesthetic and utilitarian qualities of such scores:
